Plymouth is located on the western side of Minneapolis. The second tier suburb in the seventh largest city in the state of Minnesota located in Hennepin County. Plymouth was incorporated in 1858 and covers 35.33 mi.² of land.
Four districts serve Plymouth depending on your homes location and you should be aware as a home buyer. All of the schools are wonderful but knowing the school borders is very helpful. The five school districts are, Wayzata public schools number 284, Robbinsdale area schools number 281, ICO schools number 279 and the Hopkins schools number 270. The elementary schools are Burch view, Gleason, Greenwood, Kimberly Ln., Oakwood, Plymouth Creek and Sunset Hill. The middle schools are Wayzata East middle school, Wayzata Central middle school and Wayzata West middle school. All students go to Wayzata Senior high school. There are a little over 3500 students in the grades 9 to 12 as of 2011 making it the second largest school by enrollment in Minnesota.
One of the things home buyers like about Plymouth over and above several of the nearby cities is the variety in real estate. Because Plymouth is West of 494, it's a very large area with expansion. Unlike the cities of New Hope and Crystal, you can still find new construction. The majority of that is single-family homes as well as townhomes. You're looking at about a 25 minute commute depending on traffic to downtown Minneapolis. It's very easy to get to any of the western suburbs via 494.
As a real estate agent serving Plymouth, I've seen more growth in this suburb than almost any other in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. A lot of different things drive home buyers to Plymouth. In my experience it's been a mix of location and the variety of homes for sale. Because it's a larger suburb they're still building new construction. You can get some really good deals farther west in Plymouth on newer construction homes. The existing construction is very similar to the style and Minnetonka but the neighborhoods are much more similar. Meaning if you're in a house for $250,000 most of the homes surrounding you will be very similar in style size and price. Where as you take Minnetonka and the prices can be all over the board.
